Kind words about a tough event

One of the big hits on the Connemarathon facebook this week has been the comments made by club member David Hawcroft after the Ultra.
David had reached a crisis point in the race but the kindness and encouragement of a race official was crucial in encouraging him to complete the race.

I was running down Killiary Fiord quickly getting more shattered in that wind and by the time I got to the turn in Lennane I had had enough. I asked this marshal (who was really an angel just come down for some work experience) about transfer back to Maam when she persuaded me into the cafe, then BOUGHT me a pot of tea, and when I came out suggested in the gentlest possible way that I could possibly walk/jog the mere 13 miles to the finish. Which I did and got the ultra medal!! I am British but have lived here for 15 years or so, and what I like about Ireland is - the Irish people. David Hawcroft

Chiswick Half Marathon

West London's Chiswick House and Gardens provided the start and finish for the inaugural RocketSports Half Marathon which was held on Sunday 7th April. Clear skies, sunshine and temperatures of 8 degrees welcomed runners to the picturesque grounds of this Palladian villa which dates from 1729.

Winner James Savage covered the distance in 1:12:30, leading home a field of 106. Trim's Robert Tobin - a newcomer to the distance - completed the course in a time of 1:41:00, placing 34th.

Starting out east alongside the River Thames, the route passes local landmarks such as Fullers Brewery and Chiswick Eyot, circumnavigating Craven Cottage before turning against the river at Putney Bridge.

From Putney Bridge the Surrey bank takes the pancake-flat course by several boat houses before underfoot conditions deteriorate from solid paving to loose gravel. Gravel even gave way to mud in some places although recent dry weather meant that most runners came home relatively clean. This part of the course passes the London Wetland Centre and Harrods Depository, passing beneath Barnes Railway Bridge.

The final few miles take runners across Chiswick Bridge and onto the Middlesex bank, with a final turn at the Eyot leading them home to Chiswick House and Gardens.

Masters men finish third in Mullaghmeen.

St Brigids AC once again hosted the Meath Hill Runing championships at the wonderful Mullaghmeen Forest Park  on Saturday 6 April. The running conditions were absolutely perfect with bright sunshine, a drop in recent wind speed and bone dry underfoot conditions on the open trail sections.
Trim Athletic Club were led home by teenager Conor Daniel who finished 4th junior man in a time of 21.36. The next Trim runners home were the masters duo of Barry Harten,22.04 and Declan Swords,22.09. There was 3 minute gap back to Stuart Daniel who was closely followed by Ken Foley in his first ever hill run. Suzanne Halpin was the only female runner form Trim AC and she completed the challenging course in 29.57.

The Trim Athletic club mens masters team of Barry Harten, Declan Swords and Stuart Daniel finished in third place in the county championship event behind Dunshaughlin AC and St Brigids AC. Well done all.

Special thanks to the host club St Brigids AC for staging another safe and memorable event in a fantastic setting.

Connemara half/full/ultra

Three members of Trim Athletic Club travelled to Connemara yesterday. We were represented in each distance.Difficult terrain and strong winds made yesterdays race a real test. John Lee had a brilliant run to finish 14th in the half with a very good time of 1h29. In the marathon Mark Melia continued his recent good form with a fine 3h28 effort. The ultra event was especially gruelling and David Hawcroft wisely took time for a light refreshment on his way to a time of 7h14.

Egg cellent Easter running

Fr Murphy AC staged their 5 mile road race on Easter Sunday around the village of Kildalkey. The reasonably flat course took the field of 163 around the townlands of Moyrath, Rathcormack, Ballinadrimna and Baskinagh. The crisp cold day ensured that everyone ws eager to break a sweat as quickly as possible when the starters pistol sounded. Trim AC was well represented and a number of our members reported back to training on Tuesday night with new Pbs for the distance.

In addition to new personal achievements our members scored individual and team placings. The womens masters team won its grade led home by Clare Smith with Laura Cotter and Ann Tobin adding to the winning aggregate time tally. In the masters 35-49 mens competition the Trim team of Quinton Bourke, Don Mahon and Declan Swords acquited themselves well by taking third spot behind two of the strongest masters club teams in the country, Dunshaughlin and Dunboyne.
